RX-7 Battery RelocationThis battery has been powering the car now for about 2 weeks of daily driving, and at least 2 months of driving about once a week. It has never failed to start the car. However keep in mind that it doesn't get very cold here, and this car has no stereo or extra electrical draw. I'm pretty sure that with the radiator fans on high and the headlights on that the battery is being drained slightly. It is rare that I encounter that situation though. Parts Used:
Baker Precision PB19 battery
13 feet 2 gauge battery cable 9" 4 gauge ground strap 2 5/8" crimpless 2 gauge lugs about 18" of 5/16 threaded rod 4 5/16 nylock nuts 2 5/16 nuts 4 large thrust washers Custom mount made from 1/16 x 3 steel stock and welded at the local muffler shop for $5 Install Notes:
I don't have the storage bins in the car. you could probably just cut the bottom of one bin off if you want to leave them in.
This battery is fully sealed so its ok to mount inside. I grounded the battery to the rear seat belt mount on the tranny tunnel using a standard M10x1.5 bolt. The stock positive terminal clamp has a bolt that holds it on, i removed that then used the bolt to bolt on the 5/8 lug from my new cable. I had to lift up the center console to run the cable across the car behind the seats. The cable runs through the firewall through a hole just under the brake booster. I still need a fuse on the battery. I just used a propane blowtorch on the crimpless connectors. Dont forget to rustproof the mild steel you might have used (I used POR15). |
